A vicar in Wales has apologised for a dirty message on his church's signboard that he says was a cultural mix-up.

The meaning of forgiveness was lost in translation when Reverend Bob Marshall displayed the sign at Ebenezer Baptist Chapel in Buckley, North Wales, which said: "Forgiveness is swallowing when you want to spit."

The minister, who is from the US, said he didn't realise the salacious meaning of the statement.

"When I put that sign out I had no idea what it meant over here. Forgiveness is what it's all about. One lady said she didn't even see the word forgiveness," Rev Marshall told local media.

"The Lord helped me take it down because the wind blew it over."

A new sign outside the church now says: "Honk if you love Jesus: Text while driving if you want to meet him," Metro.co.uk reports.

"The intention is to be hard-hitting. I want people to think. It's real stuff," Rev Marshall says.
