An international drone competition has produced some stunning aerial shots of what the world looks like from up high.

Dronestagram says thousands of entries were submitted from both professional photographers and amateur drone enthusiasts.

It's the third year the competition has run, which is sponsored by National Geographic and GoPro among others.

Photos were judged on creativity and photographic quality by National Geographic deputy director Patrick Witty and Emanuela Ascoli, photo editor of National Geographic France and Dronestagram.

There are three categories - travel, adventure-sports, and nature-wildlife.

The winning nature shot by Michael Bernholdt is of Kalbyris Forest in Denmark.

"The Emerald is a small patch of pinewood surrounded by mixed forest and a small creek," he says.

"I had been spending hours on Google maps, in satellite mode, trying to locate interesting patterns and places. I already had a pretty good idea about what I should expect when I arrived at the location. To my luck it had snowed all day so that the pine wood really stood out."

The winning adventure-sport shot was taken by Max Seigal of his friends who were trying for a first ascent on some off-width climbing routes in the desert in Utah.

"We hiked for miles looking for the perfect line, and then spotting this amazing crack that was about 400 feet off the ground. Using the drone, I was able to capture images that would have never been possible before."

The first prize for travel was taken out by Francisco Cattuto's incredible shot of the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisin in Umbira, Italy.

"It was a foggy day, nonetheless I decided to go up in the sky to see more from above, and after the drone came out from the clouds the view was spectacular," he says.
