A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has struck western Ecuador.

The US Geographical Survey says the quake's epicentre was 58km south of Esmeraldas at a depth of 10km.

A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said in a statement.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake last month, Ecuador's worst in nearly seven decades, killed more than 650 people and injured around 16,600.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa tweeted from Quito that so far there were no reports of damage.

The quake cut electricity in some coastal areas and sent people running into the streets as far away as the highland capital Quito.

Correa later tweeted: "The epicentre was Mompiche. There are no damages reported. There is no tsunami warning."
