Carparks are common places to suffer a vehicle scratch, but a rare incident in a flooded London carpark left several cars crushed into the roof.

A water main burst in the southeast London area of Crayford at the weekend, flooding the main street and soaking into the polystyrene insulation beneath an underground carpark.

The insulation swelled, pushing the carpark floor about 1.2m upwards and crushing up to 16 parked cars into the ceiling.

Fortunately for some cars, a taller transit van stopped the floor rising further.

Sadia Farzana Chitra had parked her Ford Fusion on Saturday, but returned to find it ruined.

"My car is crushed, the roof is gone, the ground has come up - it is a bad architectural design," she told the Press Association.

"The problem is who to contact. Someone has said the car insurance might not cover it because it didn't happen from the driver. We are in really, really bad shape."

Water was cut off from many houses in the surrounding area, with trucks of bottled water brought in.
