An Australian golfer has had a lucky escape after being bitten by a crocodile while playing in Port Douglas on Tuesday.

John Lahiff, 75, suffered puncture wounds to his leg when he went to retrieve a ball from the water on the 11th hole at the Palmer Sea Reef course.

"I drove a cart around there to retrieve the ball and I didn't see a croc sunbaking just on the edge of the water," he told reporters from his hospital bed.

"I walked past it, and it got me on the way back. As soon as it grabbed me, it took off into the water."

Mr Lahiff says the attack will not put him off playing golf – he'll just try not to hit balls in the water from now on.

"I'll just stay away from them, that's all. Just don't hit balls in the water. It's partly my fault for disturbing it – it was just sunbaking."
