Help at hand for arthritis sufferers

What looks like a medical breakthrough may mean better lives for those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.

A tiny disc planted under the skin in a patient's neck can now change signals from the body's nervous system and reduce inflammation.

The device fires electronic pulses for three minutes a day down a major nerve to the spleen, disrupting the immune system and making the spleen produce fewer chemicals. The result is less swelling around joints and far less pain for arthritis sufferers.

Although the device has only been tested on a relatively small number of patients so far, it is hoped one day similar procedures may also be able to treat conditions like asthma, obesity and diabetes.
