Melbourne residents are working to clean up debris after high winds hammered the city.

The freak storm has claimed the life of one woman and injured eight others across Victoria. Emergency workers received more than 2000 calls for help.

The woman died when a tree fell on her house in the Melbourne suburb of Millgrove, ABC reports.

Wind gusts of more than 100km/h downed power lines and pylons cutting power to tens of thousands of residents.

Public transport was also affected with a number of train lines being replaced by buses or suspended altogether.

Travellers bound for Melbourne were urged to check with their airlines for delays. However, the first flight to Melbourne out of Auckland airport left on time on Monday morning.

A severe weather warning has been lifted for most of the state but residents in coastal areas are being advised to move vehicles away from trees and to tie down any loose items outside.
