Hundreds in Naples evacuated after sinkhole swallows street

A 10m-wide sinkhole has opened up suddenly in a suburban street in Naples, Italy.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of hundreds of people living on the edge of the crater.

Local authorities say ground subsidence had already created a small hole in the ground before a burst water pipe, coupled with heavy rain, caused the massive collapse.

Surprisingly, none of the surrounding buildings appear to have been damaged.

Engineers plan to fill the hole with concrete to prevent further collapses.
