IBM has developed a new chip that draws inspiration from the human brain.
It's being touted as a far-more advanced type of processing that will be able to handle advanced tasks quickly.
IBM says the new technology, called Synapse, could be the start of a new generation of computing that mimics the brain's abilities of perception, cognition and action.
Tim David, head of Canterbury University's Bluefern supercomputing unit, says the general design of computer chips – separate processors and memory – hasn't changed since the 1950s.
Computers have gotten faster since then, but to keep the advances coming, scientists are looking at alternatives – in particular, the human brain.
