A new billboard in Chicago carries a blunt and direct message for notorious terrorist group Islamic State from Muslims in the US.

A non-profit Muslim organisation used the giant ad to say, "Hey ISIS, you suck", along the Quran quote, "Life is sacred", before signing it, "From: #ActualMuslims".

Islamic State (IS, also referred to as ISIS or Daesh) holds large areas of Iraq and Syria, subjecting the largely Muslim populations there to an extremely violent, dangerous and repressive rule.

IS has also directed or inspired countless terrorist attacks around the globe, prompting widespread condemnation from the mainstream Islamic world, including several fatwas being placed on them.

However, the criminal organisation insists it is a Muslim group, prompting reactions such as the Chicago billboard from the Sound Vision organisation.

"It's about shouting out, 'ISIS does not represent me, I'm Muslim, I say the word "sucks", I'm like everyone else in my country'. We want to scream it from a billboard," says Leena Suleiman, a representative of the group.

"Obviously Muslims know that ISIS sucks, so the main audience is people who are not Muslims - people who need to hear that Muslims are not OK with what ISIS is doing."

Photos of the billboard have been widely shared on social media and Reddit.
