A stealth Navy vessel that was co-designed in New Zealand has been severely damaged by fire, just hours before going out for its first sea trials in Indonesia on Friday. The US$10 million trimaran developed for the Indonesian Navy caught fire while workmen finished work on its interior.

The fast missile-carrying boat, the KRI Klewang 625, burnt on the docks of the Indonesian Navy Base in Banyuwangi, East Java, destroying nearly two-thirds of the ship.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but all workmen managed to escape on time. The fire was extinguished by three fire trucks stationed at the base’s docks.

The 62-metre vessel was made of carbon composites that can't be detected by radar.

New Zealand company Lomocean, who helped design it, also developed the Earthrace boat Ady Gil.
