Legal action against Apple to be withdrawn

The US Justice Department is expected to withdraw its legal action against Apple after successfully accessing the iPhone of San Bernardino gunman Syed Rizwan Farook, says a federal law enforcement official.

The alternative method used by the FBI allowed them to crack the device's security function without erasing its contents, says the official.

In December, Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik carried out a mass shooting that left 14 dead.

Apple has been fighting a court order obtained by the FBI last month, which required the company to write new software to disable passcode protection and allow access to the phone. The tech giant argued such software would compromise the privacy and security of all of their customers globally, law-abiding or not.

Apple declined to comment on this latest development.
