A rogue lightning bolt obliterated an Australian man’s stone statue of Venus and the only feature that escaped unharmed were her 30 kg breasts.
Northern Territory stonemason Tom Finlay carved the “motherly and voluptuous” statue of the Greek goddess out of local porcelanite and erected it 10 years ago.
But last Friday, he watched as his carving was blown apart by an “almighty kaboom” of white light which disintegrated everything but her hand-carved bosoms.
“There was a clap of thunder and the sculpture blew up like a rocket-launcher had hit it," he told NT News.
The stone shattered and the statue’s breasts fell 8 metres to the ground, with only one of the nipples receiving damage.
"I might mount (the breasts) and hang them in my office,” he says. “It was my tribute to Territory women.”
Mr Findlay carved the goddess of love and beauty in 2002 when Claire Martin was the chief minister of the Northern Territory – the first woman to hold the position.
It was his first attempt at human sculpture and he says he will leave the remnants in his courtyard as a tribute to mother nature, he told NT News.
