Severe thunderstorms with gusts up to 120 km/h are forecast to strike parts of Adelaide already hit by bushfires, according to a report.

In the past hour 9News has reported lightning strikes starting grass fires, as well as rain and thunder hitting the city.

The storms could cause havoc for firefighters battling to contain bushfires that have so far destroyed up to 38 houses, AAP reports.

The Bureau of Meterology issued a thunderstorm warning for several parts of Adelaide at about 3pm this afternoon (local time) telling residents to stay inside during a storm, move cars away from trees, secure loose items and keep clear of fallen power lines.

A bureau spokesman earlier told AAP the severe weather team had been monitoring and assessing the situation.

"The forecast for today is for light winds over the fireground with the potential for strong gusts if a thunderstorm occurs in the area," senior meteorologist Brett Gage said.
