Police investigating the murder of a young Melbourne woman have this afternoon made an arrest.

The body of 22-year-old Sarah Cafferkey was found at a property in the Point Cook suburb on Saturday night – eight days after she was reported missing.

A 47-year-old local man was arrested at a residential property in Hawthorn this afternoon.

Earlier today police had identified a convicted killer as a “person of interest” in their investigation.

They named Steven James Hunter as someone they would like to speak to and urged him to come forward.

Melbourne’s The Age newspaper reported that Hunter knew Ms Cafferkey and had exchanged Facebook messages with her in the weeks leading up to her death.

He commented on photographs Ms Cafferkey had posted of herself, joking that she was a “heartbreaker” and the two discussed catching up for a drink.

It is understood the Fongeo Dr address where Ms Cafferkey’s body was found is owned or rented by a friend of Hunter’s.

Neighbours told Fairfax Media they had not seen anybody at the house in the past week.
