Man tells of being attacked by a shark in Bahamas

A US dentist almost had his own dentistry rearranged after a shark attacked him in the face while he was spearfishing in the Bahamas.

Dr Steve Cutbirth was free diving and spearfishing when a bull shark came at him, trying to eat the fish on his spear.

The shark knocked off the man's mask and bit him in the face and the right leg. Dr Cutbirth says the shark wasn't trying to attack him, it was going for his natural prey but it got more than it bargained for.

"All of a sudden it felt like a truck hit me in the face," he says.

"I turned around and saw his white underside of his mouth and his teeth opened right there... he kept just bouncing into me and you can't tell if they're biting you or they're just hitting you."

He let his spear go and swam to the surface.

"He wasn't going for me; he was going for that fish on the spear. I could tell."

Dr Cutbirth was rushed to a local doctor and had his wounds stitched up. He says the damage is only cosmetic.

He told local media he had been fishing in the same spot for 25 years and had never had a problem with sharks before.
