Melbourne toddler dead after alleged kidnapping

Melbourne police are hunting for a man after a toddler was found dead in a creek after allegedly being snatched from her pram.

Sanaya Sahib's mother says she was violently pushed to the ground when her daughter was kidnapped during a trip to the park.

A shrine of pink flowers and teddy bears lies beside the creek where 15-month-old Sanaya's body was discovered.

"She was a happy girl, well looked after and couldn't have had any more love," says friend Melynda Smith.

She was a happy girl taken too soon in what police are describing as a random attack.

Her mother says a stranger knocked her to the ground and ran off with her daughter at Olympic Park on Saturday.

Sofina Nikat gave chase but couldn't catch the man, who she said smelled of alcohol and wasn't wearing shoes.

"We think it's completely random," says Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey. "At this point there are no suspects. The mother and father are assisting police with their enquiries at the moment."

Detectives are scouring the area for clues near Darebin Creek. That scene has now become a place of grieving for family and friends.

Police say they don't yet have any key suspects in the case and their investigation into what happened to an innocent girl continues.
