Mitt Romney’s staff made one final mistake to top off a gaffe-ridden campaign: making his victory website go live on election night.
A draft version of the site was only online briefly, but was captured by observant blogger and former policy advisor Taegan Goddard, and posted to politicalwire.com.
It contained information about the January 21 inauguration ceremony, and a quote from “President-Elect” Romney.
“I’m excited about our prospects as a nation. My priority is putting people back to work in America,” it said.
A section of the website called “Restoring America’s Leadership” said: “President-elect Romney believes that if America does not lead, others will – others who do not share our interests and our values – and the world will grow darker, for our friends and for us.”
Preparing a transition website is normal procedure for presidential candidates. Government funds are allocated to both nominees long before election day, so they can begin anticipating a potential handover.
ROMNEY’S GAFFES
Among the things Mitt Romney was criticised for during his campaign was telling Republicans that 47 percent of Americans would vote for Obama “no matter what” because they depended on government handouts. The comments were caught on video at a fundraising event.
During the first presidential debate, he said he would end federal funding for the Public Broadcasting Service, which makes Sesame Street.
Romney said that although he liked Big Bird, funding cuts were needed to balance the country’s budget.
His “binders full of women” catch-phrase from the second debate took on a life of its own. Romney had used it to demonstrate his efforts to achieve gender equality in his cabinet, but many women took to the internet saying they found the phrase patronising.
