You might consider this story clickbait, but it's definitely not click fraud; and while it might make you think WTF, it's definitely not NSFW.

Lost? Well, Merriam-Webster has unveiled 1700 new words for its unabridged dictionary, covering technology, popular culture, science and beyond. The terms above in italics are four of them.

Clickbait is defined as "something (such as a headline) designed to make readers want to click on a hyperlink, especially when the link leads to content of dubious value or interest". Ahem.

Click fraud is "fraud committed by clicking through an advertisement on a website multiple times to spuriously increase the cost to the advertiser".

NSFW and WTF are acronyms you've probably come across on the internet – the former standing for "not safe for work", the latter an expression of surprise beginning in "what the" and ending in an expletive.

FWIW – "for what it's worth" – is another acronym Merriam-Webster's included this year.

"Whatever they do or are, all of them are members of this vibrant, expanding language we share," says Merriam-Webster associate editor Emily Brewster.

It's not known if Ms Brewster made the announcement in jeggings, "a legging that is designed to resemble a tight-fitting pair of denim jeans and is made of a stretchable fabric".

Other terms added include:

  • photobomb – "to move into the frame of a photograph as it is being taken as a joke or prank" ;
  • twerking – "sexually suggestive dancing characterised by rapid, repeated hip thrusts and shaking of the buttocks, especially while squatting";
  • vocal fry – "a vocal effect produced by very slow vibration of the vocal cords and characterised by a creaking sound and low pitch";
  • emoji – "any of various small images, symbols, or icons used in text fields in electronic communication (as in text messages, email, and social media) to express the emotional attitude of the writer, convey information succinctly, communicate a message playfully without using words";
  • net neutrality – "the idea, principle, or requirement that internet service providers should or must treat all internet date as the same regardless of its kind, source, or destination";
  • macaron – "a light, often brightly coloured sandwich cookie consisting of two rounded disks made from a batter of egg whites, sugar, and almond flour, surrounding a sweet filling (as of ganache, buttercream, or jam)";
  • colony collapse disorder – "a disorder of honeybees (Apis mellifera) that is characterised by sudden colony death due to the disappearance of all adult worker bees in a hive while immature bees, the queen bee and the honey remain and that is of unknown cause";
  • sriracha – "a pungent sauce that is made from hot peppers pureed with usually garlic, sugar, salt, and vinegar and that is typically used as a condiment";
  • upcycle – "to recycle (something) in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item".
