Although New Zealand is one of the first countries to celebrate the New Year, others were quick to follow with their own extravagant central-city fireworks displays over tranquil harbours.

The Sydney Harbour provided a spectacular location for fireworks spiralling off the Sydney Harbour Bridge, followed by fireworks across Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.

Marina Bay in Singapore had tens of thousands of floating "whishing spheres", each wish representing a belief that the New Year will bring new possibilities.

Meanwhile, in snowy Russia, Red Square in Moscow proves a popular vantage point for fireworks bursting across the capital's wintery wonderland.
