A New Zealand man has been seriously injured in a stabbing in Thailand that may have been sparked by a business dispute.

Christopher Smith was stabbed in the back on Kata Beach and is in Phuket Hospital.

The 52-year-old runs a surf shop with his wife. The Thai man who allegedly stabbed him runs a surf board rental business.

Police say there have been disputes between the two men in the past.
