Fiji is again struggling to clean up after two days of heavy rain and flooding.

A 19-year-old woman is missing after she was swept away by strong currents near Nadi, Fiji yesterday afternoon.

The woman tried to swim across a river with three of her friends, and failed to reach the other side due to strong currents.

"We've seen too much complacency in the last few days with children, teenagers and adults swimming in flooded areas," the Government says.

"It's dangerous to venture out in flooded waters so please be safe and move to higher grounds or safe shelters."

Fiji has been in recovery mode since February when Cyclone Winston tore through the island nation.

Hundreds of people on the main island of Viti Levu have had to evacuate their homes, and nearby schools are acting as evacuation centres.

The Fiji Government has posted on its Facebook page: "The Fiji Police Force is working closely with town councils to assist the public in moving out of flooded areas. While there is still light, families living in flood prone areas must move to their nearest evacuation centres."
