South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has given his first TV interview about the night he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

He spoke to journalist Mark Williams-Thomas from his uncle's house, as he prepares to return to jail after his sentencing on July 6.

In the interview, which screens on TV3 at 8:30pm on June 27, Pistorius gives his account of what happened on the night he shot his girlfriend.

He also talks about his relationship with Ms Steenkamp and allegations he'd been abusive to her before.

The Paralympian killed the 29-year-old model when he fired four times through a locked toilet door, but he has always maintained he thought he was shooting at an intruder.

Pistorius was originally convicted of manslaughter, but an appeal court overturned that decision and instead found him guilty of murder.

He now faces a minimum of 15 years in jail. However, the judge could reduce his sentence due to time already served in prison and mitigating circumstances.
