According to Australian researchers, taking paracetamol to help ease back pain has little or no effect.

Scientists considered the results of 13 drug trials with 5000 patients and found the over-the-counter drug to be ineffective for back pain, despite being the most frequently recommended treatment.

The researchers also warned long-term use could lead to liver damage.

They believe paracetamol is no better than a placebo for people with lower back pain, and offers a very small effect or pain relief for those with knee or hip osteoarthritis.

Instead, they recommend exercise and physical activity.
