A petition is calling for Australia to put the face of Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, on its currency.

It's been 10 years since the legend of the Aussie outback was killed by a stingray off the coast of Port Douglas.

"It's about time we payed our respects to the all time greatest Australian bloke (sic),", the petition says.

"Although he's been recognised in many ways, I'd imagine we could all support the idea of going one step further."

More than 2000 people have so far signed the petition and left messages of support.

"I loved him he was a massive inspiration to me and millions of other Australians," one reads. "I remember when he died in 2006, I was walking home from grade 6 and cried the whole way home."

Another wrote: "Why shouldn't we pay respect to someone who undoubtedly changed the way Australia and the world thinks about wildlife."
