An Royal Air Force Spitfire is to be auctioned off to benefit war veterans, 75 years after it was shot down over Dunkirk.

It had been lying hidden in the sands of a French beach for 40 years until it was discovered when part of the plane was spotted poking out from its sandy grave.

The fighter plane, dubbed ‘the ballerina’ because of its grace in the skies was being piloted by Flying Officer Peter Cazenove over Dunkirk when it was shot at from a German Dornier bomber.

Mr Cazenove died just a few weeks before the plane was discovered. Shortly before he passed away he is even said to have told his wife, "I wonder whatever happened to my Spitfire”.

It's likely the plane will reach NZ$5 million at auction.
