Creepy clowns have been roaming around terrifying common folk across the UK, but now there's someone stalking them in the dark.

In a case of life imitating art, a vigilante in humble Cumbria is dressing up as Batman in an effort to combat the clown craze taking over the county.

They're probably not as dangerous as Batman's greatest nemesis The Joker, but Cumbria's Caped Crusader has vowed to chase down the clown cronies and run them out of town.

"To all the little kids that's (sic) been scared and affected by these clowns, you don't need to worry anymore - Batman's taking care of it," he says in a video posted to the Cumbria Superheroes Facebook page.

He also had a message for the clown club - pick on someone your own size.

"And as for you clowns, if you want to scare someone, why don't you try and scare me?"

It seems chasing clowns has kept Batman's hands full, as he declined an invite to a show by Holly and Phil, saying "unfortunately I'm extremely busy".

BBC Cumbria posted an image of the Dark Knight running after a clown, as well as a screenshot from an unnamed boy thanking Batman for his work.

"Hi batman, my name is XXX…  I have been scared of this clown situation (school told us about it yesterday) (sic).

"I seen on my mammy fb that u caught the clown this means I can go to school and not be scared - thank you for your efforts (sic)," the boy wrote.

As part of his superhero duties, Batman also dropped in to visit to a seven-year-old boy from Woodhouse in Whitehaven, much to his delight.
