Five people are confirmed dead and a suspect is in custody after a school shooting in a remote part of Saskatchewan, Canada.

The incident at La Loche Community School forced the school into lockdown, in what the prime minister Justin Trudeau has described as "every parent's worst nightmare."

Sky News is reporting a number of others are currently being treated for gunshot wounds following the shooting, two of whom are in critical condition.

A student at the school told local broadcaster CBC he had heard multiple shots fired and that he had run outside.

"There was lots of screaming. There was about six, seven shots before I got outside. I believe there was more shots by the time I did get out."

CBC also reports a cellphone video taken by a local resident shows students leaving the school when police were entering the building.

In a statement online, politician Brad Wall said he was shocked by the incident, and sent his condolences to the families of those affected.

The remote aboriginal community houses around 3000 people.
