A 10-year-old girl has been pulled from the wreckage of the Italian town of Pescara del Tronto, after spending 17 hours trapped under rubble.

The child was buried in the devastating earthquake that has killed at least 247 people.

Firefighters battled to free her, removing the debris that covered her.

"Come on, Giulia, come on, Giulia - watch your head," one rescuer can be heard shouting.

As she was pulled out the crowd cheered and shouted "she's alive".

"The 10-year-old girl was just pulled out now from the rubble and she is being taken to the hospital, and that is good news," said firefighter Danilo Dionisi after the rescue.

"As far as the rest is concerned, the images speak for themselves; you can see what the town looks like."

However, there is no rest for the rescuers. They will continue their grim search, pulling bodies from the ruins, hoping that they will find the last few survivors in time.
