An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 has struck off the Solomon Islands, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

It was centred 89km west of Kira Kira at a depth of 10km, striking at around 8:10am on Saturday (NZ time).

A number of aftershocks have followed.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says tsunami waves reaching 1 to 3m are possible along some coasts of the Solomon Islands.

Civil Defence has not issued a warning for New Zealand.

It's the second big quake to hit the region in as many days, after the Islands were rocked by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake early on Friday morning.

It caused widespread damage to some villages and islands, and triggered a tsunami warning across the Pacific.
