Space hears first record tunes

A vinyl record has been played in space for the very first time.

A special balloon carried up a turntable which played 'A Glorious Dawn' by John Boswell.

The record played on repeat for over an hour before the balloon burst, sending the turntable plummeting back down to earth.

Third Man Records, the label behind the achievement, say there were some difficulties in making sure the record would actually play.

"As you rise higher and higher into the thinning atmosphere, temperature and increasing vacuum (lack of air) can cause issues," says designer and engineer Kevin Carrico.

Vinyl has a low melting point at 71degC, so the warmth of the sun could render it an unplayable lump.

"Without air, things in direct sunlight can get very hot while things in shade can get very cold," Mr Carrico says.

"This constant expansion and contraction can physically distort a vinyl record, rendering it unplayable."

It took more than three years to design, make and launch the contraption.

Third Man Records was founded by White Stripes star Jack White in 2001.
