A Sydney man who strapped a hoax collar bomb around the neck of an 18-year-old girl will serve at least 10 years in prison.

Paul Peters had hoped to extort money from Madeleine Pulver’s family with the bizarre hoax last year, but was arrested in the United States two weeks after the incident.

He pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated breaking, entering and stealing in March this year.

Peters was jailed for 13-and-a-half years this afternoon.

Peter’s lawyer, Kathy Crittenden, had said her client “deeply regrets” the incident and is sorry for the impact it had on Ms Pulver and her family.

During the incident the 52-year-old strapped the hoax bomb to Ms Pulver and pinned a letter to her chest that read, “Don't tell the cops, or I'll detonate”.

A 10-hour ordeal followed as police converged on the Pulvers’ $10 million home, ended when officers realised the ‘collar bomb’ was not an active device.

A USB stick discovered by police and containing a draft demand letter was instrumental to the case, as was CCTV vision of Peters buying items associated with the home-made device.

The reason for the extortion attempt remains unknown.
