Sydney ferry careens into wharf

At least 18 people were hurt when a ferry crashed into a Sydney wharf on Tuesday afternoon, one with suspected spinal injuries.

The Supercat hit a jetty at Circular Quay, near the city's famed Opera House, just after 4pm.

"You felt it should have been stopping, but it wasn't," one passenger told Channel 7 News.

"This is my first day before I go on a cruise and it's just been a shock," said another, being wheeled away by paramedics.

"A Sydney Ferry Supercat came into contact with the far eastern pontoon at Circular Quay Wharf as it was berthing this afternoon," a Transport for NSW spokesman said.

"There were 18 customers injured in the accident, with two taken to hospital for further treatment."

The Office of Transport Safety Investigations is looking into the crash.
