A 17-year-old performing the iconic 'Gangnam Style' dance in public was reportedly killed by an Asian boy who felt his moves were racist, a British court has heard.

Jordan Brennan was doing the dance, made famous by Psy, while visiting a corner store in Manchester with his friends last October, the Mail Online reported.

The 16-year-old defendant, whose name was not published, was angered by Jordan's moves, thinking his South East Asian ethnicity was being mocked.

A struggle is understood to have occurred between the pair, with the defendant demanding Jordan apologise.

Jordan fell back, hitting his head on metal shutters and a concrete floor. He was found dead in his bed the next day.

The defendant admitted manslaughter at Manchester Crown Court on Thursday (local time) after his not guilty plea to murder was accepted, the Mail Online reported.

"The defendant accepts committing the unlawful act that led to the death," said defence barrister Kate Blackwell QC.

"The deceased made remarks on the appearance of the defendant that he found racist in tone. They were making him embarrassed and angered him in front of his girlfriend."

Prosecutor Rob Hall noted the defendant never had an intention to kill, but may have intended to cause serious harm.

"On one view that is Jordan being in high spirits and exuberant and dancing to a popular current song, and on another view, and the view held by the defendant, is that the performance was a racist slur against him because of his appearance and ethnicity," he said.

"The Crown would simply say the evidence is inconsistent as to the motivation of Jordan at the time. We understand why the defendant reached the conclusion that he did."

The defendant has been bailed until his sentencing in March.
