A gay couple in South Africa are the proud new parents of triplets, given birth by a surrogate they met as a result of Oscar Pistorius' murder trial.

Christo and Theo Menelaou lived next door to the disgraced former Olympian. After he was found guilty of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, the neighbourhood got together - which is where they met the surrogate.

The triplets - Joshua, Zoe and Kate - were born a couple of months early, weighing between 1.3 and 1.8kg.

After a few weeks in hospital, they were allowed to go home in Pretoria.

"We're so happy. We're blessed," says Theo.

Zoe and Kate are also twins. Initially two embryos were planted - one fertilised with Christo's sperm, the other with Theo's. Ten weeks into the pregnancy, a scan revealed one of the embryos had split.

They were told by doctors to terminate the twins to give the other a better chance at life, but they rejected the advice.

The new dads wish their former neighbour could have been around to help out.

"I haven't seen him for a while," says Christo.

"If he would have been here, he would have been teaching these boys and girls all the tricks in the book, being a good uncle. I feel guilty sometimes, but that's the way of life."

Pistorius is serving a six-year sentence.
