One person is dead, and at least 14 people are reported to have been struck by lightning during rare summer thunderstorms in California.

Lightning hit Venice Beach at around 2:20pm on Sunday (local time). Two people are in a critical condition, the Los Angeles Fire Department says. It is not clear how many of the injured were directly hit by lightning.

The LA County fire department says there may be missing swimmers, reports local television station ABC7.

People in Southern California have been warned to stay indoors during the severe storm, which has ignited several brush fires and cut power to some areas.
