A Canadian singer has been left red-faced after mangling the anthem of her northern American neighbour at an ice hockey tournament.
Alexis Normand's nerves appeared to get the better of her as she began singing the United States' national anthem at a Memorial Cup match in Saskatoon.
Three lines into 'The Star-Spangled Banner', Normand forgot the words "through the perilous fight", pausing and then laughing as she tried to gather her thoughts.
She then resorted to improvisation, causing giggles among the players before the crowd eventually stepped in to help her finish the song.
Normand later told Canadian publication The Star Phoenix she was mortified at her performance.
"It's been pretty overwhelming," she said. "I'm embarrassed by it, and I'm very sorry to have made the mistake. But mistakes happen to everyone, and life goes on."
Normand is now adjusting to becoming an internet sensation.
"Who would have thought this was the way to get my name out!
"I had to mess up this bad? It's crazy."
Even 3 News Political Editor Patrick Gower has had more luck singing the US anthem, after losing a Rugby World Cup bet to the Greens in 2011 and being forced to perform it at one of their caucus meetings.
Normand is scheduled to sing at the Memorial Cup again later this week. But this time, it's the Canadian anthem – and she'll be hoping for better success.
