An intoxicated Australian man with a breath-alcohol level three times the legal limit careered through the front of three shops on Melbourne's Sydney St this morning.

The 24-year-old was speeding along a road in the northern suburb of Brunswick, when he lost control and ploughed into the row of shops.

He and his 27-year-old passenger escaped without serious injury but he now faces a number of charges including drink driving, careless driving and speeding.

The drunken man left a bridal boutique, a cake shop and a hairdressing salon severely damaged with repair bills estimated to reach tens of thousands of dollars.

Police were called at 4am this morning and breath-tested the man, who blew triple the limit.

Bridal shop owner Sara-Jade Dorrington spent the day cleaning up glass and organising repairs.

“It’s just negligence in driving. Don’t drink and drive really," she told 7 News. "I feel sorry for all of our small businesses who have to deal with this."

The driver is understood to be cooperating with police.
