Commuters in north-eastern Spain were greeted by an unusual sight on Tuesday morning when a herd of 17 goats wandered onto underground train tracks in the city of Terrassa.

Security guard Antonio Jesús Martínez took on the role of goatherd, spending 40 minutes using his whistle and voice to guide the goats towards an unused track in the station.

The animals were disoriented  and frightened, he told El País, but did not cause any major disruptions to the train service.

Eventually the real goatherd was located. Eight or nine hours later – once night had fallen and the station had quietened down – he was able to lead the animals, one by one, up the station steps and out the pedestrian exit.

No-one knows quite knows how the goats found their way onto the train tracks in the first place – it seems they were just kidding around.
