Cyclone Evan struck Fiji overnight – the worst storm to hit the island nation in nearly 20 years.

3 News reporter Hamish Clark spent the night in the Novotel Hotel in the tourist capital, Nadi.

He says strong winds ripped through the resort, uprooting trees and tearing off roofs.

Inside the hotel, many of the rooms flooded and debris was strewn across the floor.

Hotel management evacuated guests overnight who didn’t feel safe and setup a conference room with bedding for people to sleep.

Power remains on at the hotel with a backup generator available, but guests are without water for the time being.
