Members of the New York Police Department have demonstrated their true strength by lifting a taxi off a trapped man with their bare hands.

Police say 19-year-old Luis Velasquez was hit by the 1.7-tonne Ford Crown Victoria taxi when he ran into traffic in the Bronx, and became stuck under the vehicle.

NYPD officers were responding to a dispute outside a nearby restaurant at the time and at least a dozen of them came to Mr Velasquez’s rescue.

Their heroics were captured on camera by Rico Elias.

“There was no jack,” he told television network CBS.

“They used their hands and backs and lifted the car up and over and got him out!"

It is not known whether Mr Velasquez was involved in the restaurant dispute.

Mr Velasquez is reported to be in a critical condition with head and other serious injuries.

Accident investigators say the taxi driver will not face charges.
