A 10m humpback whale has washed ashore in the US with officials believing it had been dead for four to five days.

Experts say the whale that washed ashore in Sea Isle City, New Jersey was a male juvenile and appeared to be emaciated.

Bob Schoelkopf, the director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, said no official cause of death is apparent at this time, and that there were no injuries which might indicate a cause.

There were bite wounds in the side of its body.

The Public Works Department is on the scene and evaluating.
