Vladimir Putin has finally phoned Elton John and agreed to meet up and chat about gay rights in Russia.

The British entertainer has long pushed to talk to the Russian President to voice his concerns over anti-gay laws in the country, but until now his calls went unanswered.

The phone call on Thursday (local time) came a week after a pair of Russian comedians rang John pretending to be Putin.

"Putin phoned him," Dmitry Peskov, Mr Putin's spokesperson, told reporters. "He said: 'I know some guys played a trick on you on the phone, but don't get offended. They are harmless people, though that of course does not justify what they did.'"

The Russian President told John that he would be ready to meet with him since he was a famous singer and talk about any subject that interested him if their schedules coincided, Reuters reported.
