A Walmart store in Florida has been slammed online for a tasteless Coca-Cola display resembling the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, which were brought down in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Sunday marks 15 years since two hijacked planes flew into New York's tallest buildings, bringing them to the ground and killing thousands.

A photo of the display shared on Twitter quickly gained thousands of retweets and outraged reactions that the tragic event was being used to sell Coke.

A banner above the stack of soft drink boxes, with the Walmart and Coca Cola logos, said: "We will never forget."

The display, which has been removed, was designed and created by Coca-Cola, Walmart spokesperson Charles Crowson told local media.

"This display was meant to honor local firefighters and to support their organization's upcoming event," Coca-Cola spokeswoman Kimberly Kuo told CNBC.

Walmart has been known for its questionable US holiday displays. One store marked Independence Day with a battleship made of Bud Light beer boxes, and for Veteran's Day another store made a soft-drink display in the shape of a bald eagle.
