A surprise guest has given the Canterbury rugby team a comedic lift ahead of their clash with Northland this Friday in Whangarei.

Comedian and actor Rhys Darby donned the red and black and made a cameo performance at the team’s training session.

“I could have been one of New Zealand's greatest sportsmen; instead I ended up telling jokes,” says Darby.

His visit was organised by former All Black Andy Ellis, and Darby’s main job was to name the side to play Northland on Friday.

“I let out the surprise I was in the team and I was hoping for 'hurrah'. Instead I got ‘oh no’,” says Darby.

And while his appearance was part self promotion for his Christchurch show, it was also a welcome diversion for the team during a jam-packed season.

“He was good. It seemed every thing he said had the boys in hysterics, so that's the sign of a good comedian,” says Ellis.

While Darby's livelihood is making people laugh, Canterbury's priority is the serious business of successfully defending the ITM Cup.
