The New Zealand branch of Nissan is trying to establish how many cars here are affected by the company's worldwide recall of more than two million vehicles.
The automaker is recalling 2.14 million vehicles, the third-largest recall ever, for an ignition problem that could cause the engine to stall and fail to start.
A problem was found in an ignition-system part for vehicles produced from August 2003 through July 2006, including small cars like the March, Cube and Note, and about a dozen other models, such as the Tiida sedan, Titan pickup and Infiniti QX56 luxury model.
Nissan New Zealand managing director John Manley said the number of New Zealand vehicles affected was not yet clear and that the company would be working with the transport authorities to track down imported vehicles.
The recall follows three others this week, with Toyota, Honda and BMW all having issued recalls.
The Toyota and Honda recalls were due to brake fluid leaks that could lead to weaker braking power.
Toyota recalled more than 1.6 million vehicles internationally, including 1872 in New Zealand, while Honda recalled more than 470,000, including 114 in New Zealand.
Six BMW sports utility vehicles with a possible fuel pump problem were among the 130,000 vehicles recalled internationally yesterday.
