The Chow brothers and their Penthouse Club

For the first time this year Wellington's Chow brothers, John and Michael, hit the NBR rich list with an estimated $50 million fortune.

They arrived in New Zealand from Hong Kong 30 years ago and have made their millions in restaurants, property and most recently, the sex industry.

The Chow brothers have opened the country's first Penthouse Club.

But it's just the beginning. They dream of opening another club at the summit of their 15-storey building opposite Sky City.

Their ambition has already prompted grumblings for the established players in the Auckland market.

Last year there were claims of a strip club turf war breaking out in the capital, as the Chows successfully opposed a liquor licence for rival Calendar Girls.

Of course there are also the voices of those who object to the sex industry on moral grounds.

Penthouse magazine did not want to be associated with the legal sex trade and in its contract with the brothers, there is no entrance between the club and the brothel next door.

The Chows are quick to point out they own gyms, restaurants and a lavish property portfolio, but understand if you open one brothel that's all anyone wants to talk about.
