It was the bar where then relatively unknown Kiwi singer Lorde performed for her first paying audience but now the Mighty has fallen.

Mighty Mighty on Wellington's Cuba St has announced it is closing but is planning a number of events to farewell the iconic venue before closing for the last time in late May.

The bar opened in November 2006 and has hosted a number of live bands including Beastwars, Die! Die! Die!, The Clean and Lorde.

Co-owner Sally Thompson says the bar's 15 staff were told on Sunday and the closing date in May would give them a chance to find other jobs, Fairfax reports.

Lorde's first New Zealand shows were held in May 2013 at Galatos in Auckland and at Mighty Mighty before she made it big globally with hit song 'Royals'. The shows sold out in minutes.

Mighty Mighty will join other popular venues around Wellington's CBD including Puppies and Sandwiches which have or are in the process of closing. The San Francisco Bath House has also closed while renovations are being undertaken.
