Skin review

Sam Neill is back on the big screen, sporting facial hair and a South African accent, in a new film called Skin.

This film is based on the fascinating true story of Sandra Laing, a coloured girl born to white Afrikaans parents, a genetic throwback which during the apartheid era would have devastating consequences for them all.

Oscar-nominee Sophie Okonedo plays Sandra, Neill is her father... And both bring their obvious class to the screen.

But for a story steeped in such personal and cultural drama, the telling of it was strangely the opposite, keeping the audience at a distance and robbing the story, one really worth telling, of impact.

Two and half stars.
