The Hunter review

Kiwi legend Sam Neill has a new film in cinemas - he stars alongside Willem Dafoe in The Hunter, an intriguing moody thriller set in Tasmania and based on the acclaimed novel from Australian author Julia Leigh.

Dafoe plays a mercenary sent to Tasmania to hunt the elusive Tasmanian tiger, thought to be extinct, and also thought to have rather special bio-chemical powers which could be worth millions to biotech companies.

The locals have other more pressing issues on their plate and their intentions, including Neill's, are shadowy at best.

I loved the pace and performances here, and while by no means flawless, I found The Hunter a good watch.

Three and a half stars.
